bacp registered counsellor in Brighton and Hove
An Initial consultation lasts up to 50 minutes and is a meeting designed to help us understand more about you, what brings you to counselling but above all how we can support you get back on your feet by referring you to the therapist with the right skill set and experience to deal with your struggle.
During an initial consultation, the experienced assessing counsellor will ask you certain questions about you and your life, including your present situation but also your childhood. Some of the questions will be about the most meaningful relationships you've had so far, and experiences that have somehow left a mark. You'll also be asked what you hope to gain from counselling and, if you had therapy in the past, what you found helpful about it or not so helpful.
Being asked so many questions can feel uncomfortable, so a way to cope is to come prepared. A good idea, for instance, is to write down in advance what you'd like to talk about because this will not only help you better describe your feelings in relation to your situation but also put you more at ease once you meet the counsellor.
During the initial consultation the counsellor will also explain to you what you can expect from counselling, and other practicalities such as payments, cancellations, contracting with your allocated counsellor. Finally, you'll be asked what your specific needs in terms of cost and availability to attend are so we can take these into account too when we decide whom you should be referred to for ongoing therapy.
There is no obligation to accept our offer for counselling following an assessment, but in general, if you do accept you can expect to start therapy within 10 days from this initial meeting.
The cost of an initial assessment is £45 for which we gently require payment upfront within 24 hours of booking in order to avoid no-shows which have a severe impact on our ability to operate smoothly and offer a fair service to all. We thank all our prospective clients for their cooperation with this.
